A fresh controversy has emerged amid the ongoing protests by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in New Delhi after the party's chief spokesperson Saurav Das claimed that his official WhatsApp account had been blocked. The allegation has sparked political debate, with the CJP questioning whether the action was taken independently by the messaging platform or at someone else's direction.
Saurav Das made the claim through a post on X (formerly Twitter), where he wrote that his WhatsApp account had been blocked and publicly asked the platform to explain why the action was taken and on whose direction it was carried out. The post quickly gained attention on social media and was widely shared by CJP supporters.
Soon after the post, the CJP's official social media handles also questioned Meta-owned WhatsApp over the alleged account block. Party leaders said they were seeking transparency regarding the reason behind the restriction and demanded that the company clarify whether the action resulted from an automated system or a manual review.
The development comes at a politically sensitive time, with the CJP continuing its protest movement in Delhi over education-related issues. In recent days, the party has organized demonstrations, held meetings with government representatives and participated in public campaigns demanding reforms in the examination system and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Earlier this week, Saurav Das and fellow CJP representative Ashutosh Ranka met Union Minister J. P. Nadda to submit the party's demands. Following that meeting, the Centre appealed to the protesters to end their sit-in, while the CJP stated that its movement would continue until its demands were addressed.
As of now, WhatsApp and its parent company Meta have not issued any official statement regarding Saurav Das's allegation. There is also no official confirmation about whether the account was temporarily suspended, permanently blocked or restricted due to any specific policy enforcement.
WhatsApp generally states that accounts may be restricted if they are found to violate its Terms of Service. Common reasons can include spam-like behaviour, use of unofficial versions of the app, repeated complaints from users or activity detected as suspicious by automated systems. However, there is currently no evidence that any of these reasons apply to Saurav Das's account, and the company has not linked the reported action to any particular policy violation.
The CJP has said it expects a formal explanation from WhatsApp and has indicated that it will continue raising the issue publicly until a response is received. Supporters of the party have also questioned the timing of the alleged account block, arguing that it occurred while the organisation was actively coordinating protest activities in the national capital. These claims, however, remain the party's allegations and have not been independently verified.
Digital rights advocates note that social media and messaging platforms regularly take enforcement actions under their community guidelines and platform policies. At the same time, they stress that transparency is important when public figures or political organisations report restrictions on their official communication channels.
With no official response yet from Meta, the controversy continues to attract attention online. Whether the account block resulted from an automated moderation system, a policy enforcement decision or another reason is expected to become clearer only after WhatsApp issues a formal clarification.
