Over 140 Migrants Missing After Boat Drifts Off Mauritania, UN Raises Alarm

At least 143 migrants and refugees are feared dead or missing after a boat attempting to reach Europe drifted for 25 days in the Atlantic Ocean before being found off the coast of Mauritania, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The incident is among the deadliest migrant tragedies reported this month and has once again highlighted the dangers of the Atlantic migration route to Spain's Canary Islands.

According to UNHCR, the overcrowded boat departed from The Gambia carrying dozens of migrants hoping to reach Europe. During the journey, the vessel reportedly suffered severe difficulties at sea, leaving passengers without adequate food, drinking water or medical assistance. Survivors described extremely harsh conditions as the boat drifted for weeks before rescue teams located it.

Rescue authorities managed to save several survivors, many of whom were suffering from dehydration, exhaustion and other serious health complications. They were taken to medical facilities for treatment, while humanitarian agencies began providing emergency assistance.

The UN refugee agency has renewed its warning that the Atlantic route remains one of the world's most dangerous migration corridors. Thousands of migrants continue to risk the journey each year in overcrowded fishing boats and wooden vessels while attempting to reach Europe through the Canary Islands.

Humanitarian organizations say people fleeing poverty, conflict and political instability often rely on human smuggling networks, which send boats across the ocean despite dangerous weather conditions and limited safety equipment. Many vessels disappear without ever being found.

Following the latest tragedy, international agencies have called for stronger cooperation between African and European countries to improve maritime search-and-rescue operations, combat human trafficking networks and expand safe migration pathways.

Authorities continue efforts to identify the victims and determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident. The tragedy has once again drawn global attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis affecting migrants attempting the dangerous Atlantic crossing.
