BMW Unveils AI Strategy and New Electric Vehicle Expansion Plan

BMW has announced a broad new strategy focused on artificial intelligence, organizational efficiency, regionalized vehicle production and the expansion of its next generation of electric vehicles.

BMW new electric i3 and AI-focused global automotive strategy

The German automaker presented the strategy at its 2026 Capital Market Day, outlining plans designed to increase development speed, simplify its organizational structure and strengthen its position across major global automotive markets.

BMW Plans 20% Leaner Management Structure

One of the central elements of BMW's new strategy is a planned reduction of approximately 20% in its management structures.

The company said a leaner organizational structure should create faster decision-making processes and improve efficiency across the business.

BMW said additional measures are still being evaluated, with further decisions expected by spring 2027.

The company is targeting an automotive EBIT margin of 3% to 5% in 2028 and aims to return to a long-term margin range of 8% to 10% in the early 2030s.

Artificial Intelligence Moves Deeper Into BMW Operations

Artificial intelligence will play a larger role throughout BMW's business under the new strategy.

The automaker says AI-based innovations will be used to systematically increase development speed and improve processes across its value chain.

The technology is expected to support areas including vehicle development, production, engineering and other business processes.

BMW is also expanding autonomous-driving capabilities, beginning with additional development and deployment work in Germany.

New Electric BMW i3 Enters the Neue Klasse Era

BMW has also introduced the new fully electric BMW i3 as the first electric 3 Series based on its Neue Klasse architecture.

The new generation combines BMW's traditional 3 Series model line with a new electric vehicle platform and updated digital technology.

Two fully electric versions are available from launch, while additional petrol-powered models with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology are also part of the new 3 Series family.

The BMW M350 xDrive will serve as the flagship petrol-powered version of the new range.

BMW Investing Around €2 Billion in 3 Series Production

BMW is investing approximately €2 billion in the production of the new 3 Series in Germany.

The eighth-generation 3 Series will be produced at BMW facilities in Munich and Dingolfing, while batteries will be supplied by the company's new Irlbach-Straßkirchen plant.

The investment is intended to support production of the next-generation vehicle family while strengthening BMW's manufacturing operations in Germany.

Regionalization Becomes a Bigger Part of BMW's Strategy

BMW is also planning to regionalize more of its vehicle lineup and production.

The company wants its products and manufacturing operations to better reflect individual market requirements rather than applying exactly the same approach across every region.

China is a particularly important part of this strategy. BMW plans to increase the share of vehicles tailored specifically to Chinese customer preferences.

The company is also considering greater exports from China to markets in Southeast Asia.

New Models Planned for Europe and the United States

BMW's future product strategy includes additional electric and premium vehicles across its major markets.

In Europe, the company plans to introduce an entry-level electric vehicle from the Neue Klasse family in 2028.

In the United States, BMW plans to introduce a new luxury SUV positioned above the X7.

The company is also working to expand its high-value vehicle segments while reducing unnecessary complexity across the model range.

Competition Is Reshaping the Global Auto Industry

BMW's strategy comes as automakers face rapid changes in the global automobile market.

Traditional manufacturers are investing heavily in electric vehicles, software, artificial intelligence and driver-assistance systems while also dealing with changing consumer demand and increased competition from Chinese vehicle manufacturers.

The shift toward software-defined vehicles is also changing how automakers develop and update cars.

BMW's decision to integrate AI more deeply into development and production reflects the wider transformation taking place across the automotive industry.

Technology-Open Approach

BMW says it will continue to follow a technology-open strategy rather than relying exclusively on one type of powertrain.

The new 3 Series illustrates this approach by offering fully electric models alongside petrol-powered vehicles using 48-volt mild-hybrid technology.

This allows BMW to offer different propulsion technologies across markets where customer preferences, charging infrastructure and regulations can vary considerably.

Focus on Faster Vehicle Development

BMW's new strategy places significant emphasis on shortening development cycles and improving the speed at which new technologies reach customers.

AI-based tools are expected to contribute to this objective by helping engineers and development teams process information and optimize parts of the vehicle-development process.

The company is also reducing organizational complexity in an effort to make decisions faster.

BMW's Financial Targets

BMW expects its automotive business to reach an EBIT margin of 3% to 5% in 2028.

Over the longer term, the company is targeting an automotive EBIT margin of between 8% and 10% by the early 2030s, along with automotive free cash flow of at least €7 billion.

These targets depend on the successful implementation of the company's restructuring, product strategy, regionalization plans and technology investments.

What Comes Next for BMW

BMW's strategy will now move into an implementation phase, with several additional measures expected to be evaluated through spring 2027.

The company will simultaneously expand its Neue Klasse technology across its vehicle lineup, increase the use of artificial intelligence and continue adapting production to regional markets.

The new BMW i3 and the latest 3 Series represent an important part of that transition, combining electric powertrains, updated digital systems and BMW's next-generation vehicle architecture.

With AI becoming a larger part of automotive development and electric vehicles continuing to reshape the industry, BMW's latest strategy shows how traditional automakers are reorganizing their businesses around technology, software and changing global market conditions.
