Huawei Mate 90 Launches With Kirin 9050 Pro and HarmonyOS 7

Beijing, October 1, 2026 — Huawei has officially launched its new Mate 90 smartphone series in China, introducing a new generation of Kirin processors, HarmonyOS 7 and an updated hardware architecture designed to improve performance despite continuing restrictions on China's access to advanced semiconductor technology.

The new lineup represents another major step in Huawei's effort to develop its smartphone hardware and software ecosystem using technologies developed within China. The flagship Mate 90 Pro Max is powered by the new Kirin 9050 Pro processor, which uses a technology Huawei describes as a LogicFolding architecture.

New Kirin 9050 Pro Processor

One of the biggest developments in the Mate 90 series is Huawei's new Kirin 9050 Pro chip.

The processor uses a three-dimensional chip-wiring approach known as LogicFolding. The architecture is designed to reorganize connections inside the processor to create a denser chip design and improve performance within the limitations of available semiconductor manufacturing technology.

According to Huawei's specifications reported around the launch, the Mate 90 Pro Max delivers a significant performance improvement over the previous generation. Reuters reported Huawei's claim of a 31% increase in overall performance compared with its predecessor.

The processor is particularly important because Huawei continues to operate under U.S. restrictions that limit its access to some advanced semiconductor technologies and equipment.

HarmonyOS 7 Comes to the New Flagship

The Mate 90 series runs Huawei's HarmonyOS 7 operating system, the company's latest software platform for smartphones and connected devices.

Huawei has been transforming HarmonyOS from a traditional smartphone operating system into a broader platform built around artificial intelligence and agent-based interaction.

The company says HarmonyOS 7 is designed to allow its AI assistant and system-level capabilities to understand user intentions and perform multi-step tasks across applications and devices.

Huawei has also been expanding the HarmonyOS ecosystem for developers, with system-level AI capabilities designed to allow applications, Skills and AI agents to connect with the operating system.

Mate 90 Pro Max Targets the Premium Smartphone Market

The Mate 90 Pro Max sits at the high end of Huawei's new smartphone family.

Reuters reported that the model is priced at 9,999 yuan, equivalent to approximately $1,491 at the exchange rate used in its report.

The higher price reflects not only the advanced hardware but also rising costs for memory and other smartphone components across the industry.

Huawei is targeting consumers interested in premium displays, photography, high-performance processing and AI-powered smartphone features.

Camera Technology Remains a Major Focus

Huawei continues to place smartphone photography at the center of its flagship strategy.

The Mate 90 family introduces an upgraded camera system designed to improve image quality across different lighting conditions and shooting scenarios.

The top Mate 90 Pro Max configuration includes advanced telephoto imaging technology, while the broader Mate 90 family uses Huawei's XMAGE imaging platform.

The company is using its camera hardware and computational photography systems together with the new processor to improve image processing and high-dynamic-range photography.

Huawei Builds Around Its Own Technology Ecosystem

The Mate 90 launch is important beyond the smartphone itself because it demonstrates Huawei's continuing effort to build a technology ecosystem that is less dependent on foreign hardware and software.

The company has been developing its own smartphone processors, operating system, AI platforms and developer tools.

Huawei has also expanded its Ascend computing platform for artificial intelligence and has been encouraging developers to build applications and AI systems around its hardware and software ecosystem.

In September, Huawei said its HarmonyOS ecosystem had surpassed 85 million devices running HarmonyOS 6 and HarmonyOS 7, while the broader OpenHarmony ecosystem had more than 1.3 billion devices.

Chip Restrictions Continue to Shape Huawei's Strategy

Huawei's smartphone business has been closely watched because of restrictions affecting China's access to advanced semiconductor technology.

Huawei's newest Kirin processors are therefore significant indicators of the company's ability to improve chip performance while operating within those constraints.

Reuters reported that the Kirin chips are believed to be manufactured by China's SMIC, although Huawei has not publicly confirmed the manufacturing relationship for the new processor.

The company continues to face limitations because China does not currently have access to the most advanced extreme ultraviolet lithography equipment used by leading global semiconductor manufacturers.

Instead, Huawei and other Chinese technology companies are pursuing alternative chip-design and manufacturing techniques to increase performance using available production capabilities.

Huawei Maintains Strong Position in China's Premium Market

The Mate 90 launch comes as China's smartphone market faces weaker overall shipment volumes and higher component costs.

Reuters reported that overall Chinese smartphone shipments had declined by 7%, while Huawei's volumes increased by 13% over the period cited in its report.

Huawei has also maintained a strong position in China's foldable smartphone segment, where the company has continued to compete aggressively with domestic manufacturers and Apple's newer foldable products.

The company's ability to maintain premium-market demand has helped it remain one of the most closely watched smartphone brands in China.

AI Becomes Central to Huawei's Smartphone Strategy

The Mate 90 generation also reflects the growing role of artificial intelligence in smartphones.

Huawei's HarmonyOS 7 platform is being developed around an agent-based approach in which software can understand user intent and connect different applications and system functions.

The company has been upgrading its Xiaoyi assistant and expanding access to system-level AI capabilities for developers.

This strategy follows a broader industry trend in which smartphone manufacturers are increasingly using AI not simply for photography or voice commands but for task automation, personalization and interaction across multiple devices.

Competition Intensifies in China's Smartphone Market

The launch places Huawei's latest flagship directly into a highly competitive Chinese smartphone market.

Apple, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo and other manufacturers are investing heavily in premium smartphones, AI capabilities and advanced camera systems.

Apple's recent entry into the foldable smartphone market has also increased competition in China's high-end segment, while domestic manufacturers continue to introduce new display, camera and battery technologies.

Huawei's response is based on combining its own operating system, processors, AI technology and imaging systems into a single ecosystem.

What the Mate 90 Means for Huawei

The Mate 90 series is more than a new flagship smartphone for Huawei. It is another demonstration of the company's strategy to develop critical parts of its technology stack internally.

The combination of the Kirin 9050 Pro, LogicFolding architecture and HarmonyOS 7 shows how Huawei is attempting to improve performance while navigating restrictions on access to some of the world's most advanced semiconductor manufacturing technologies.

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly important to mobile devices, the ability to combine powerful processors, operating systems and AI software could become a major competitive factor in the smartphone industry.

The Mate 90 series therefore marks another important stage in Huawei's effort to build a self-reliant technology ecosystem while competing in China's rapidly changing premium smartphone market.
