NEW DELHI — The Government of India has accelerated the rollout of Passport Seva Programme 2.0, introducing faster passport processing, wider availability of chip-enabled e-Passports, and expanded Passport Seva Kendras across the country. The announcement was made during the 14th Passport Seva Divas, where External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the government's efforts to modernize passport services and improve accessibility for Indian citizens.
Officials said the upgraded system aims to make passport issuance more secure, transparent, and efficient by using advanced digital technology.
What Is Passport Seva Programme 2.0?
Passport Seva Programme 2.0 is the latest version of India's passport service platform.
Under the upgraded system, citizens will benefit from:
- Faster passport processing
- Expanded e-Passport rollout
- Improved online services
- Better appointment management
- Stronger document verification
- Enhanced cybersecurity
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the programme is designed to reduce waiting times while improving the overall user experience.
e-Passports Being Expanded
A major feature of the programme is the expansion of chip-enabled e-Passports.
The electronic chip securely stores the passport holder's personal and biometric information, making passports more resistant to forgery and identity fraud.
The new passports also comply with international standards followed by many countries around the world.
More Passport Seva Kendras
The government is continuing to expand Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) so that citizens in smaller towns can access passport services closer to home.
Officials said this expansion has significantly increased passport issuance capacity over the past few years.
Record Number Of Passports Issued
The Ministry of External Affairs said India has recorded its highest-ever passport issuance in recent years as international travel, education, employment, and tourism continue to grow.
Digital verification and improved online systems have helped reduce processing delays in many regions.
Government's Vision
The government says Passport Seva Programme 2.0 is part of its broader Digital India initiative and aims to make public services more citizen-friendly through technology.
Officials believe continued modernization will improve service delivery while maintaining strong security standards for international travel.
Looking Ahead
With the nationwide expansion of e-Passports, improved digital infrastructure, and additional Passport Seva Kendras, India is moving toward a faster and more secure passport system. The Ministry of External Affairs says more upgrades and wider availability of e-Passports are expected in the coming months as Passport Seva Programme 2.0 continues to expand across the country.
