Odisha Suspends Four Officials After School Textbooks Describe Isaac Newton as a 'Pilot'

Odisha school textbooks spark controversy after Isaac Newton is mistakenly identified as a pilot.

BHUBANESWAR — The Odisha government has taken strict action after an official inquiry uncovered 1,678 spelling, factual, grammatical, and contextual errors in newly published school textbooks for Classes 1 to 8. One of the most widely discussed mistakes described legendary scientist Sir Isaac Newton as the "greatest pilot" instead of one of history's greatest physicists, triggering nationwide criticism and raising serious concerns about quality control in the state's education system.

Following the findings, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi ordered immediate disciplinary action. Four senior officials, including former Director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Manoj Padhi, were suspended, while disciplinary proceedings were initiated against several other officials involved in preparing and approving the textbooks.

The controversy has sparked intense debate among educators, parents, and political leaders, with many calling it one of the biggest textbook quality failures in recent years.

Over 1,600 Errors Found Across 55 Textbooks

According to the government's inquiry committee, the newly introduced textbooks—prepared under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 for the 2026–27 academic session—contained 1,678 mistakes spread across 55 textbooks for Classes 1 through 8.

The mistakes included:

  • Factual inaccuracies
  • Spelling mistakes
  • Grammatical errors
  • Incorrect captions
  • Wrong scientific information
  • Historical mistakes
  • Geography-related errors
  • Translation errors

Education experts said the number of mistakes was unprecedented for government-approved textbooks.

Isaac Newton Described As A 'Pilot'

Among all the errors, the one that attracted the most public attention was the description of Sir Isaac Newton as the "greatest pilot."

Newton is globally recognized as one of the greatest scientists in history. His discoveries in physics, mathematics, and gravity laid the foundation for modern science.

The mistake quickly went viral on social media, with thousands of users expressing disbelief over how such a serious factual error could pass multiple levels of review before reaching students.

Teachers and educationists warned that inaccuracies of this nature could seriously affect children's learning.

Other Serious Mistakes Identified

The inquiry committee also found several other major factual errors in different textbooks.

Among them were:

  • The Hampi heritage complex incorrectly identified as the Konark Sun Temple.
  • Scientific concepts mixed up, including confusion between equinox and equator.
  • Incorrect illustrations and captions.
  • Multiple errors in mathematics, science, geography, and language books.

Officials said many of these mistakes should have been detected during proofreading and academic review.

Chief Minister Orders Strict Action

Taking serious note of the issue, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi ordered a high-level inquiry soon after the errors became public.

After examining the committee's findings, the government suspended four senior officials responsible for supervising textbook preparation.

Those suspended include:

  • Former SCERT Director Manoj Padhi
  • Assistant Director Pradipta Mishra
  • Assistant Director Dilip Kumar Sahu
  • Assistant Director Bharati Tudu

In addition, disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against several other officials connected with the textbook preparation process.

Government Accepts Reform Recommendations

The inquiry committee also submitted 14 recommendations aimed at preventing similar mistakes in future publications.

Among the key recommendations are:

  • Creation of a permanent Quality Assurance Cell.
  • Better academic review before publication.
  • Multiple proofreading stages.
  • Preparation of a Master Errata Register.
  • Immediate correction notices for schools.
  • Stronger accountability for officials involved in textbook preparation.

The Odisha government has accepted these recommendations and directed the School and Mass Education Department to implement them.

Political Reactions

The issue quickly turned into a political controversy.

Opposition parties accused the government of failing to ensure basic educational standards and questioned how textbooks containing thousands of mistakes were approved for printing.

Government officials responded by saying the mistakes were unacceptable and assured that corrective action had already begun.

Education experts have largely welcomed the government's decision to suspend responsible officials but stressed that long-term reforms are equally important.

Parents And Teachers Express Concern

Parents across Odisha voiced concern over the impact these errors could have on young students.

Teachers said textbooks are the primary source of learning for children, especially in government schools, making factual accuracy essential.

Several educators urged authorities to distribute corrected versions as soon as possible to prevent confusion in classrooms.

Many schools have reportedly received instructions to inform students about the identified mistakes until revised editions become available.

Looking Ahead

The Odisha textbook controversy has highlighted the importance of rigorous editorial review in educational publishing. With 1,678 documented errors found across dozens of textbooks and senior officials suspended, the incident has become one of the most significant education-related controversies in the state in recent years.

As the government works to correct the books and implement new quality-control measures, parents, teachers, and students will be watching closely to ensure that future textbooks meet the standards expected of educational materials.
