The investigation into the death of Dwisha Sharma, who was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on 12 May, has taken a significant turn after a fresh forensic examination conducted by a five-member medical board at AIIMS New Delhi. The board's final report has now been submitted to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), providing crucial scientific evidence that could play an important role in the ongoing probe.
The second post-mortem examination was ordered by the court after questions were raised regarding the circumstances surrounding Dwisha Sharma's death. A multidisciplinary medical board at AIIMS carried out a detailed forensic review, including histopathological and laboratory examinations, before preparing an 11-page sealed report for investigators.
According to officials familiar with the findings, the forensic experts confirmed through histopathological analysis that skin tissue was present on the gymnastics belt allegedly used as the ligature in the case. The examination found that the recovered tissue corresponded with the injury marks on the victim's neck.
The report concludes that the skin tissue recovered from the belt is consistent with the ligature marks found during the medical examination, strengthening the forensic link between the object recovered from the scene and the injuries sustained by the victim.
Investigators believe this finding resolves one of the key disputes in the case regarding the object used to create the ligature. Earlier, questions had been raised about whether the belt recovered from the scene was actually used during the incident. The latest forensic analysis has now supported the conclusion that the gymnastics belt fitted with a metal ring was indeed the ligature involved.
The AIIMS medical board reportedly carried out an extensive scientific examination before arriving at its findings. Histopathology involves the microscopic study of body tissues and is widely used in forensic investigations to determine the nature of injuries, identify tissue transfer and establish links between evidence recovered from a crime scene and the victim.
The sealed report has now been formally handed over to the CBI, which is conducting the investigation. Officials are expected to examine the forensic findings alongside witness statements, digital evidence, crime scene observations and other scientific reports collected during the investigation.
Investigators have not yet disclosed whether the latest forensic evidence will result in additional charges or changes to the direction of the investigation. The agency has maintained that all aspects of the case continue to be examined and that further conclusions will depend on the overall evidence collected.
