Canada has announced a major defense procurement worth nearly C$2 billion (about US$1.4 billion) to strengthen the country's military capabilities. The agreement, announced today, includes the purchase of 190 new Armored Combat Support Vehicles (ACSVs) from the Canadian subsidiary of General Dynamics Land Systems, marking one of Canada's largest military equipment investments this year.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said the acquisition is part of the government's long-term strategy to modernize the Canadian Armed Forces and improve operational readiness. Once delivered, Canada's fleet of Armored Combat Support Vehicles will increase from 360 to approximately 550 vehicles, significantly expanding the army's logistical and operational capacity.

The contract will run for four years and covers the production and delivery of the new vehicles. These armored platforms are designed to support frontline military operations by transporting troops and equipment, assisting engineering units, conducting recovery operations and providing battlefield logistical support.

Defense officials stated that the new vehicles will improve troop protection, mobility and mission effectiveness while replacing older military equipment that has been in service for many years. The modernization effort is also expected to strengthen Canada's ability to participate in NATO missions and international peacekeeping operations.

The agreement is expected to provide economic benefits as well. Manufacturing and assembly work will largely take place in Canada, supporting skilled jobs in the country's defense industry and reinforcing domestic manufacturing capabilities.

The announcement comes as Canada continues increasing defense spending amid changing global security challenges. The government has recently emphasized the need to modernize military infrastructure, enhance equipment and strengthen cooperation with allies in Europe and North America.

Military analysts believe the purchase reflects Canada's broader effort to improve national defense preparedness while ensuring that its armed forces remain equipped with modern technology capable of responding to future operational requirements.

Officials have indicated that deliveries will begin after production milestones are completed, with the vehicles expected to enter service in phases over the duration of the contract. The modernization program is considered an important step in enhancing the operational readiness and long-term capabilities of the Canadian Armed Forces.
