Indian households may soon have a new option for cooking gas as Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) moves ahead with the introduction of 10-kg composite LPG cylinders alongside the conventional 14.2-kg steel cylinders. The company has placed an order for 1.4 lakh Type-IV composite LPG cylinders, marking a significant step toward modernising domestic LPG distribution in the country.
According to recent developments, HPCL has awarded a contract worth approximately ₹38.14 crore for the supply of these next-generation cylinders. The order is expected to be executed within the next six months as the company expands the availability of lightweight LPG cylinders across India.
What is a composite LPG cylinder?
Unlike the traditional red steel LPG cylinder used in most Indian homes, a composite LPG cylinder is made using advanced fibre-reinforced composite materials instead of heavy metal. This makes the cylinder significantly lighter while maintaining the required strength and safety standards.
One of its most noticeable features is its semi-transparent body, allowing consumers to easily see how much LPG remains inside without shaking the cylinder or estimating usage.
Key advantages of the new cylinders
The new composite cylinders offer several benefits over conventional steel cylinders:
- Much lighter than steel cylinders, making them easier to lift and transport.
- Transparent body helps users check the remaining gas level instantly.
- Resistant to rust and corrosion.
- Better resistance to harsh weather conditions.
- Designed with enhanced safety standards.
- More convenient for elderly users and households that frequently move cylinders.
These features are expected to improve the overall customer experience while reducing handling difficulties associated with heavier steel cylinders.
Will the 14.2-kg steel cylinder disappear?
No.
The traditional 14.2-kg domestic steel LPG cylinder will continue to be available. The 10-kg composite cylinder is being introduced as an additional option, giving consumers more flexibility based on their requirements.
The smaller size may particularly benefit:
- Small families.
- Senior citizens.
- People living in apartments.
- Students and working professionals.
- Households that prefer a lighter cylinder.
Linked to HPCL's new delivery model
The order also comes shortly after HPCL introduced a new LPG delivery initiative through quick-commerce platforms. The lightweight cylinders are expected to support faster and more convenient doorstep deliveries because they are easier to transport than conventional steel cylinders.
Safety features
Composite cylinders are manufactured using advanced engineering materials and are designed to meet stringent safety requirements.
Compared with conventional steel cylinders, they offer:
- Better impact resistance.
- No rust formation.
- Lower chances of external corrosion.
- Improved durability under normal operating conditions.
Their transparent body also helps consumers identify gas availability before the cylinder becomes empty.
Rollout expected in phases
Although HPCL has placed an order for 1.4 lakh cylinders, nationwide availability will take place in phases. Initially, the cylinders are expected to be introduced in selected markets before wider expansion depending on consumer demand and distribution capacity.
A step toward modern LPG distribution
The introduction of composite LPG cylinders represents one of the biggest upgrades to India's domestic LPG system in recent years. By combining lightweight construction, improved safety and the ability to visually monitor gas levels, the new cylinders aim to make cooking gas more convenient for millions of households.
Consumers should note that the 10-kg composite cylinder is being introduced as an additional choice rather than a replacement for the existing 14.2-kg steel cylinder. As distribution expands over the coming months, more customers across India are expected to gain access to this new-generation LPG cylinder.
