Indian Railways Issues New Rule for Digital Unreserved Tickets: WhatsApp, Screenshots and PDFs No Longer Valid

Indian Railways has introduced an important change to the rules governing digital unreserved train tickets, making it mandatory for passengers to present the original ticket in the RailOne app during ticket inspections. Under the revised guidelines, screenshots, WhatsApp forwards, photographs and PDF copies of digital tickets will no longer be treated as valid proof of travel.

The clarification is intended to prevent the misuse of digital tickets and strengthen the verification process during ticket checks. Railway officials have stated that only the live digital ticket displayed within the RailOne app on the registered mobile phone used for booking will be accepted by ticket checking staff.

What has changed?

Passengers travelling with unreserved digital tickets booked through the RailOne app must now ensure that:

  • The ticket is available in the original RailOne application.

  • It is displayed on the same registered mobile phone used to book the ticket.

  • The ticket is shown directly from the app during inspection.

If a passenger presents only a screenshot, WhatsApp copy, photograph or PDF version of the ticket, it will not be considered a valid digital ticket under the new rules.

Why has the rule been introduced?

According to railway authorities, screenshots and forwarded copies can be duplicated or shared with multiple people, making it difficult for ticket examiners to verify authenticity.

The original ticket displayed in the RailOne app contains dynamic verification details that help confirm whether the ticket is genuine and currently valid. This reduces the possibility of fraud and misuse of digital tickets.

Ticket must remain on the booking device

Another important requirement is that the ticket must remain on the registered handset used for booking. Simply forwarding the ticket to another phone through WhatsApp or email will not satisfy the verification requirement during travel.

Book before boarding

Railways have also reminded passengers that digital unreserved tickets must be booked before the train departs from the boarding station. Tickets booked after the train has already left the boarding station will not be considered valid for that journey.

What happens if you cannot show the original ticket?

If a passenger is unable to produce the original digital ticket in the RailOne app on the registered device, railway authorities may treat the passenger as travelling without a valid ticket. In such cases, the passenger may be required to pay the applicable fare along with penalties as prescribed under railway rules.

Tips for passengers

Before starting your journey, passengers should:

  • Ensure the RailOne app is installed and updated.
  • Keep the booking phone charged.
  • Log in to the registered account before travel.
  • Do not rely on screenshots or WhatsApp copies as backup.
  • Verify that the original ticket is visible inside the app before boarding.

Aim of the new policy

The updated rule is part of Indian Railways' broader effort to strengthen digital ticket verification and reduce fraudulent use of electronic tickets. By requiring passengers to present the original ticket directly from the RailOne app, railway authorities aim to make inspections faster, more secure and more reliable.

Passengers using digital unreserved tickets are therefore advised to familiarise themselves with the revised guidelines before travelling to avoid inconvenience, penalties or delays during ticket checking.
