India's quick commerce sector has entered a new phase with the launch of the country's first on-demand LPG cylinder delivery service on Instamart. The service has been introduced in partnership with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), allowing eligible customers to order domestic LPG cylinders through the Instamart app instead of waiting for traditional booking and delivery schedules. The initiative is expected to make cooking gas delivery faster and more convenient for urban households.
The new service has initially been rolled out in Bengaluru, where customers can now place an order for an LPG cylinder through the Instamart platform. According to the company, the service is designed to provide on-demand delivery, significantly reducing waiting times compared to the conventional LPG booking process. The company has also announced plans to gradually expand the service to more cities across India in the coming months.
How the new service works
Customers who are registered HPCL domestic LPG consumers can order a refill directly through the Instamart application. After selecting the LPG cylinder option, users can place an order in the same way they purchase groceries or household essentials.
Once the order is confirmed, the cylinder is delivered by Instamart's delivery network, subject to service availability in the customer's area and verification of consumer details. The initiative aims to simplify the ordering process while reducing delivery delays for consumers who need an urgent refill.
Partnership with HPCL
The service has been launched in collaboration with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), one of India's largest public-sector oil and gas companies. Through this partnership, HPCL will continue supplying certified domestic LPG cylinders, while Instamart will handle the digital ordering experience and last-mile delivery.
Officials say the collaboration combines HPCL's nationwide LPG distribution network with Instamart's quick-commerce logistics infrastructure to improve customer convenience.
A first for India's quick-commerce industry
Quick-commerce platforms have traditionally focused on delivering groceries, medicines, electronics, personal care products and daily essentials within minutes. The addition of LPG cylinders marks one of the biggest expansions of the sector into essential household services.
Industry experts believe this move could change how urban consumers purchase cooking gas, particularly in cities where quick-commerce platforms already have strong delivery networks.
If the pilot project proves successful, similar services may also be introduced by other quick-commerce companies in the future.
Benefits for consumers
The biggest advantage of the new service is the reduction in waiting time.
Traditionally, customers book an LPG refill through their distributor and wait until the delivery is scheduled. With the new model, eligible users can request a refill through Instamart whenever they need one, making emergency cylinder replacement much easier.
The digital platform also allows customers to track their order in real time, receive delivery updates and complete payments through online methods available in the application.
Initial rollout in Bengaluru
At present, the service is available only in Bengaluru.
The companies have stated that they will closely monitor customer response and operational performance before extending the service to additional cities.
Expansion is expected to take place in phases, depending on logistics capacity, regulatory requirements and demand in each market.
Growing competition in quick commerce
India's quick-commerce industry has witnessed rapid growth over the past few years, with companies competing to reduce delivery times while expanding the range of products available on their platforms.
The introduction of LPG cylinder delivery reflects the industry's strategy of moving beyond groceries and offering more essential household services.
Analysts believe this diversification could help quick-commerce platforms attract new customers while increasing order frequency among existing users.
Safety remains a priority
Since LPG cylinders are classified as essential but sensitive household products, deliveries will continue to follow existing safety guidelines issued for domestic LPG distribution.
Customers are advised to verify the cylinder's safety seal and condition at the time of delivery and report any concerns immediately.
HPCL has stated that only authorised domestic LPG cylinders supplied through its distribution system will be delivered under the new service.
Future expansion
If the Bengaluru pilot performs well, the companies plan to introduce the service in more metropolitan cities before expanding further into other urban markets.
The launch demonstrates how India's digital commerce ecosystem is evolving beyond traditional online shopping by integrating essential public utility services with fast-delivery technology.
With on-demand LPG delivery now becoming a reality, the initiative has the potential to transform the way millions of urban households access one of their most important daily necessities, while further accelerating the growth of India's rapidly expanding quick-commerce sector.
