Russia launched fresh overnight attacks on Ukraine, killing at least four people and injuring ten others, according to Ukrainian regional officials. The attacks reportedly hit the Sumy region near the Russian border and the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih, adding to the growing civilian toll from the ongoing war. The latest strikes came as Kyiv observed a day of mourning after a separate large-scale Russian attack on the capital killed at least 27 people and injured dozens more.
Officials said the overnight violence once again showed how civilians remain exposed to danger far from the front lines. Homes, residential areas and city infrastructure have repeatedly been hit during missile and drone attacks, forcing families to seek shelter in basements, underground stations and emergency bunkers.
Drone Strike Hits Home in Sumy Region
In the Sumy region, a Russian drone reportedly struck a house, killing four people from the same area. Ukrainian officials said the victims included two women, an elderly man and a girl younger than two years old. Three other people were injured in the attack.
The Sumy region lies close to the Russian border and has faced repeated attacks since the beginning of the conflict. Local authorities have often warned residents about drone strikes, artillery fire and missile threats, especially in villages and towns located near border areas.
The destruction of a residential home has once again raised concern about the safety of civilians living in regions close to active conflict zones. Emergency teams were sent to the site to search for survivors, assist injured residents and assess the damage caused by the strike.
Missile Strike Injures Seven in Kryvyi Rih
In a separate incident, seven people were injured after a Russian missile struck the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih. The city is the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and has faced multiple attacks during the war.
Officials said the missile hit a densely populated urban area, causing damage and leaving several people injured. Medical teams rushed to provide treatment, while emergency workers inspected nearby buildings for further damage.
Kryvyi Rih has become an important symbol of the war because of its connection to President Zelenskyy. The city has previously been targeted by missile and drone attacks, with civilian buildings, industrial areas and infrastructure suffering damage.
The latest strike has renewed fears among residents that no major Ukrainian city is completely safe from long-range attacks.
Kyiv Mourns Victims of Major Attack
The overnight strikes came just hours after Ukraine's capital Kyiv observed a day of mourning for victims of one of the deadliest Russian attacks on the city this year.
According to officials, Russia launched hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles at Kyiv during the previous attack. At least 27 people were killed, while more than 90 others were injured. Around 130 buildings were reportedly damaged during the assault.
Residents described hearing repeated explosions through the night as air defence systems attempted to intercept incoming drones and missiles. Many people rushed into underground metro stations and shelters as smoke rose above parts of the capital.
The scale of destruction has increased pressure on Ukraine's allies to provide stronger air-defence systems and more support for protecting cities from aerial attacks.
Ukraine Calls for More Air Defence Support
Ukrainian officials have repeatedly said that stronger air defence is essential to protect civilians. While Ukraine has received military support from several Western countries, officials argue that more systems are needed because Russia continues using drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles in large numbers.
Air-defence systems can intercept many incoming threats, but large-scale attacks can overwhelm even well-prepared defences. Ukraine says the country needs more missile interceptors, radar systems and modern air-defence equipment to protect cities, power facilities and residential areas.
The attacks have also disrupted daily life. Schools, hospitals, transport networks and businesses have all been affected in different regions. In many cities, residents continue receiving air-raid alerts at night, forcing families to remain ready to move to shelters within minutes.
Russia and Ukraine Continue Escalation
The war between Russia and Ukraine continues with no immediate sign of a lasting ceasefire. Both sides have accused each other of escalating attacks, while diplomatic efforts have struggled to produce a breakthrough.
Russia has repeatedly said its military operations are aimed at Ukrainian military targets. Ukraine, however, says many strikes have damaged civilian areas and caused heavy loss of life.
International organizations and foreign governments have continued calling for the protection of civilians and respect for international humanitarian law. The United Nations has repeatedly warned that attacks affecting homes, hospitals and public infrastructure can deepen the humanitarian crisis.
Civilians Pay the Highest Price
For ordinary Ukrainian families, the war remains a daily struggle for safety. Parents worry about children during air-raid sirens, elderly residents face difficulty reaching shelters, and many people have been forced to leave their homes because of repeated attacks.
The latest strikes in Sumy and Kryvyi Rih show that the danger is not limited to one city or one region. Even areas far from the main battlefield can suddenly become targets.
As rescue teams continue working through damaged buildings and hospitals treat the injured, Ukraine is once again facing the human cost of a war that has already displaced millions of people and destroyed countless homes.
The world is now watching whether the latest attacks will lead to stronger international pressure for peace talks, additional military assistance for Ukraine, or further escalation in a conflict that continues to affect global security.
