Amazon Signs 20-Year Nuclear Power Deal for Maryland Plant Expansion

Maryland, October 1, 2026 — Amazon and Constellation Energy have signed a 20-year power purchase agreement that will support the expansion and long-term operation of the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant in Maryland.

The agreement is expected to enable more than $3 billion in infrastructure investment at the facility and support approximately 190 megawatts of additional emissions-free generating capacity. The new capacity is expected to come online between 2030 and 2032.

Amazon and Constellation nuclear power agreement for Calvert Cliffs Maryland plant

The agreement highlights the growing importance of reliable electricity supplies as technology companies expand cloud computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure. Large data centers require significant amounts of electricity around the clock, increasing interest in long-term power contracts and nuclear generation

20-Year Agreement Covers 690 Megawatts

Under the agreement, Amazon will receive power associated with 690 megawatts from Constellation's Calvert Cliffs facility. The plant currently has approximately 1,790 megawatts of generating capacity.

The planned improvements are expected to increase the facility's total generating capability by about 190 megawatts. Constellation said the additional capacity is scheduled to become available between 2030 and 2032.

The electricity generated at Calvert Cliffs will continue flowing into the regional PJM electricity grid. It will not be physically dedicated to a single Amazon data center.

Amazon and Constellation have also entered into a separate retail electricity supply agreement covering Amazon's operations in the 13-state PJM market.

$3 Billion Investment Planned for Calvert Cliffs

Constellation plans to invest more than $3 billion in Maryland infrastructure connected with the agreement.

The investment includes upgrades across the existing 1,790-megawatt nuclear facility and improvements designed to increase the plant's electricity output.

Calvert Cliffs is located in Lusby, Maryland, on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. It is Maryland's only operating nuclear power plant and is one of the state's largest sources of electricity generated without direct carbon emissions.

According to Constellation, the facility currently produces approximately 80% of Maryland's clean energy and generates enough electricity to equal the annual consumption of more than 1.3 million homes.

Nuclear Power Gains Attention From Technology Companies

The Amazon agreement comes as major technology companies look for reliable electricity to support expanding artificial intelligence and cloud-computing operations.

AI data centers can require large quantities of electricity because they operate powerful computing systems continuously. Unlike intermittent electricity sources, nuclear plants can provide steady generation for the electricity grid.

Amazon has already pursued several nuclear-energy partnerships as part of its broader strategy to secure electricity for its expanding technology infrastructure.

Other major technology companies have also signed long-term nuclear power agreements. Microsoft has partnered with Constellation on a plan connected to the restart of the former Three Mile Island nuclear facility in Pennsylvania, while Meta has signed a long-term agreement involving Constellation's Clinton Clean Energy Center in Illinois.

Calvert Cliffs Could Operate for Another 20 Years

Amazon's long-term commitment is also expected to provide Constellation with greater revenue certainty as the company works toward renewing the operating licenses for the two Calvert Cliffs reactors.

The current licenses are scheduled to expire in the 2030s. Continued operation would require regulatory approval and additional investment in the facility.

The new agreement gives Constellation a long-term commercial commitment while the company prepares for the plant's future operating period.

Constellation also said the investment could create a foundation for evaluating additional clean-energy projects at the site, including advanced nuclear technologies.

Amazon Says Nuclear Energy Can Support the Grid

Amazon said the agreement is part of its efforts to invest in carbon-free energy while supporting electricity infrastructure in regions where it operates.

The company has been increasing its investment in energy resources as demand for cloud services and artificial intelligence computing grows.

Keeping the electricity generated by Calvert Cliffs within the wider PJM grid means the additional generation will contribute to the regional electricity system rather than being reserved exclusively for Amazon facilities.

Why the Deal Matters for AI Infrastructure

The electricity requirements of artificial intelligence have become an important consideration for technology companies building new computing infrastructure.

AI training and inference systems rely on large data centers containing thousands of processors and networking systems. These facilities require electricity not only for computing but also for cooling and supporting infrastructure.

Long-term electricity agreements can give large technology companies greater visibility over future power costs while helping energy producers finance new generation and upgrades to existing facilities.

The Amazon-Constellation agreement is therefore part of a wider shift linking the expansion of AI infrastructure with investments in electricity generation.

New Capacity Expected From 2030

The additional 190 megawatts of nuclear generating capacity is expected to become available between 2030 and 2032, subject to the required development and regulatory processes.

When completed, the upgrade will increase the output of an existing nuclear facility instead of requiring construction of an entirely new large nuclear plant.

The companies' agreement also provides a long-term framework for continued investment at Calvert Cliffs and supports Constellation's plans for the site's future.

Technology and Energy Become Increasingly Connected

The deal demonstrates how the expansion of digital infrastructure is increasingly connected with the energy sector.

As cloud computing, artificial intelligence and other electricity-intensive technologies expand, companies are looking for long-term sources of reliable power. Nuclear plants are becoming part of that strategy because they can provide continuous electricity while producing no direct carbon emissions during generation.

For Maryland, the agreement means a major investment in an existing nuclear facility and additional generating capacity expected early in the next decade.

For Amazon, the 20-year agreement provides access to a long-term electricity supply while supporting investment in regional power infrastructure.

The Calvert Cliffs expansion is now scheduled to add approximately 190 megawatts of new generation between 2030 and 2032, making the project another major example of the growing connection between nuclear energy and the global expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure.
