Disney turned the Hollywood Bowl into a major celebration for the world premiere of its live-action film Moana, bringing together thousands of guests, a live orchestra, traditional Pacific performances and a fireworks finale.
The special premiere took place in Los Angeles on July 8 and was designed as more than a regular red-carpet event. Around 4,000 guests attended the screening, where the film’s music was performed live by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.
The live-action version of Moana stars Dwayne Johnson as Maui, a role he also voiced in the original animated film. Newcomer Catherine Laga’aia plays Moana in the new adaptation.
Before the screening, Johnson and Laga’aia took part in a traditional Pacific ceremony with the Nonosina Dancers. The moment was created to honour Polynesian culture, which is central to the story of Moana.
Hollywood Bowl Becomes a Moana-Themed Venue
The Hollywood Bowl was decorated for the event, with special activities and themed installations for guests.
Disney created an immersive experience around the film, including a life-size LEGO Moana display, themed giveaways and food stalls. Guests were also given blankets at their seats for the outdoor screening.
The event included Dole Whip, a popular Disney-themed dessert, along with several brand activations and photo opportunities.
The atmosphere became even more dramatic when the Los Angeles Philharmonic began playing the film’s score live during the screening. The orchestra was conducted by Sarah Hicks.
At the end of the movie, fireworks lit up the sky above the Hollywood Bowl while the audience heard a new song from the film, titled “Along the Way.”
Lin-Manuel Miranda and Thomas Kail Attend Premiere
Director Thomas Kail and producer Lin-Manuel Miranda were also present at the premiere.
Miranda was closely connected with the original animated Moana, for which he helped create several songs. The original film became a global hit because of its music, animation and story inspired by Pacific Island cultures.
The live-action version is expected to bring the story to a new generation of viewers while keeping the main themes of family, courage, identity and adventure.
Disney has been making live-action versions of several popular animated films in recent years. Some of its biggest adaptations have included The Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid.
Dwayne Johnson Returns as Maui
Dwayne Johnson’s return as Maui has become one of the biggest highlights of the project.
Maui is a larger-than-life demigod in the story, known for his magical fishhook, humour and powerful personality. Johnson voiced the character in the 2016 animated film and performed the popular song “You’re Welcome.”
Fans were excited when Disney confirmed that he would return to play Maui in the live-action version.
Johnson has often spoken about his personal connection to Polynesian culture and the importance of representing Pacific Island traditions respectfully on screen.
The new film also gives Catherine Laga’aia a major Hollywood debut as Moana. Her performance is expected to be closely watched because the original animated character became one of Disney’s most loved modern heroines.
Strong Opening Weekend Expected
Early tracking suggests that Moana could have a very strong opening weekend at the box office.
Reports said the film is expected to earn more than $130 million during its opening weekend, which would make it one of Disney’s biggest live-action releases in recent years.
The original animated Moana was released in 2016 and became a global success. It earned more than $680 million worldwide and remained popular for years through streaming platforms, music and merchandise.
Songs from the original film, including “How Far I’ll Go” and “You’re Welcome,” became major hits with children and adults.
Disney is hoping that the live-action adaptation will repeat that success and attract both fans of the original film and new audiences.
Hollywood Reacts to the Grand Premiere
Several Hollywood personalities attended the event, including Jenna Dewan, Scott Hoying, Piper Curda and Disney legend Ming-Na Wen.
Photos and videos from the premiere quickly spread online, with fans praising the live orchestra concept and the cultural performances.
The Hollywood Bowl premiere showed Disney’s confidence in the film. Instead of holding a standard theatre screening, the studio created a large-scale event that connected the film’s music, culture and visual world.
With its star cast, familiar story and strong box-office expectations, Moana is now one of the most talked-about Hollywood releases of the month.
