October 2, 2026: Amazon has unveiled a redesigned generation of Kindle e-readers, introducing new versions of the Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft as the company prepares for the next stage of its digital reading business.
The refreshed lineup features thinner and lighter designs, redesigned displays and faster performance. Amazon has also introduced new accessories, including a Bluetooth remote that allows users to turn pages without directly touching the Kindle.
Three Main Kindle Models Get a Refresh
The new generation includes the standard Kindle, the Kindle Paperwhite and the Kindle Colorsoft.
Amazon has redesigned the devices around a flush-front display, giving the screens and surrounding bezels a more seamless appearance.
The company has also introduced additional color options and aluminum-backed versions for selected models.
Amazon says the redesigned Kindle family is thinner across the lineup, while some models are also lighter and faster than their predecessors.
New Kindle Gets Faster Page Turns
The entry-level Kindle has received a major hardware refresh aimed at improving everyday reading.
The new 16GB Kindle has a compact 6-inch display and is designed to be the lightest model in the updated lineup.
Amazon says page display performance has improved by approximately 30 percent compared with the previous generation.
The device also features a flush-front display, adjustable front lighting and a battery designed to last for weeks between charges.
An aluminum-backed 32GB version is also available for readers who want additional storage and a more premium physical design.
Kindle Paperwhite Gets a New Design
The new Kindle Paperwhite continues to focus on long-form reading with a larger 7-inch display.
The device retains its waterproof design and is rated for up to 12 weeks of battery life, according to Amazon.
The new Paperwhite has been redesigned to be thinner and lighter while maintaining the high-contrast display that is intended to resemble the appearance of printed text.
A Signature Edition is also available with additional features, including 32GB storage and automatic light adjustment.
Colorsoft Brings Color to Digital Reading
The Kindle Colorsoft is designed for readers who want to view images, illustrations, comics and book covers in color.
The updated Colorsoft features a 7-inch color display and supports multiple color highlights, allowing readers to mark passages using different colors.
Amazon says the display is designed to provide paper-like color while maintaining the glare-free characteristics associated with Kindle devices.
The Colorsoft also offers weeks of battery life, with Amazon listing up to eight weeks depending on usage.
New Kindle Click Remote
One of the most unusual additions to the new Kindle ecosystem is the Kindle Click.
The small Bluetooth accessory allows readers to control page turning remotely. Users can press the device to move forward or backward through a book without reaching for the Kindle screen.
The remote can also control brightness on compatible devices.
Amazon is targeting readers who want a more hands-free experience, particularly while reading in bed or in other situations where holding the device and touching the screen may be inconvenient.
Page-Turn Cover Adds Physical Buttons
Amazon has also introduced a magnetic cover with integrated physical page-turn buttons.
The accessory is designed for compatible new Kindle models and provides another way to navigate through books without tapping the display.
The combination of the cover and remote expands the number of ways users can interact with the Kindle while maintaining the device's distraction-free reading approach.
New Colors and Aluminum Models
The refreshed Kindle generation also introduces a wider range of colors.
Depending on the model, customers can choose from colors including Ube Purple, Alpine Sky, Seagrass Green, Fig and Graphite.
Selected models use aluminum on the rear of the device, giving the premium versions a different physical finish from the standard models.
Amazon says some of the aluminum components use recycled material as part of its sustainability efforts.
Kindle Continues to Focus on Distraction-Free Reading
Unlike tablets and smartphones, Kindle devices are designed primarily for reading and do not provide the same range of social media, messaging and entertainment applications.
Amazon says Kindle customers have read more than 720 billion pages during 2025, highlighting the scale of reading activity taking place through its e-reader ecosystem.
The company has also reported several consecutive years of double-digit global Kindle growth.
Why Amazon Is Updating Kindle Now
The Kindle refresh arrives as dedicated e-readers continue to occupy a specialized position between traditional books and multifunctional mobile devices.
Smartphones and tablets offer color displays and access to thousands of applications, but dedicated e-readers remain attractive to readers who want long battery life, glare-free screens and fewer digital distractions.
The introduction of more color-capable models also gives Amazon an opportunity to make Kindle more useful for comics, graphic novels and illustrated books.
Pricing and Availability
The new Kindle family includes several configurations with different storage capacities and materials.
The entry-level Kindle starts at approximately $149.99 in the United States, while the aluminum 32GB version starts at approximately $189.99.
The new Kindle Paperwhite starts at approximately $199.99, with the Signature Edition priced higher.
The Kindle Colorsoft starts at approximately $289.99, while the Colorsoft Signature Edition reaches approximately $319.99.
Availability varies by model and market. Some devices are already available, while Paperwhite and Colorsoft models are scheduled for later shipment in several markets.
Amazon's Next Generation of Digital Reading
The redesigned Kindle family represents a broad hardware refresh rather than a completely new reading platform.
Amazon is focusing on improvements that include thinner hardware, faster page turns, color displays, longer battery life and new physical controls.
The company is also expanding the Kindle ecosystem with accessories that give users more control over how they read.
With the new lineup, Amazon is continuing to position Kindle as a dedicated digital reading device while adding features that make the platform more versatile for modern readers.
As the updated devices begin reaching customers, their reception will provide a clearer picture of how much demand exists for premium e-readers with color displays, improved hardware and hands-free controls.
